There are various pros and cons to being sexually active as a teenager. For many the cons outweigh the pros. Consider the following points.
Pros
For many the biggest pro of being sexually active as a teenager is that they enjoy the act itself. Some might feel more grown-up or like to boast about it.
Cons
You can get a Sexually Transmitted Disease
Sexually transmitted diseases are no laughing matter. For many they can be deadly. One of the most worrisome is HIV, which will affect your entire life. There are many other diseases that can be transmitted sexually such as Hepatitis C, herpes and more. Many of these are not curable. The use of a condom and other precautions can lower your chances of contracting these but teenagers should be aware that there is no way to prevent it 100% without abstaining. Condoms can and do break.
You could end up with an unwanted pregnancy
Most teenagers are not ready to become parents. Yet it only takes one time to make this happen. Again, even birth control methods are not 100% able to prevent all pregnancies. For many teenagers who are still in school, a pregnancy could devastate their lives. It may change the entire course of their lives and be a very abrupt end to their childhood and shatter future dreams.
You do something you are not ready to do
Many teenagers do not feel like they are ready to be sexually active. They may do it because of peer pressure. They may feel guilt afterwards. They may feel bad if they are lying to their parents. They may worry about whether they could have caught an STD. It may give them confusing feelings about their partner and they may feel closer to him or her when it really isn’t a healthy relationship. They may also get a reputation that they would rather not have.
As a teenager, you will want to think long and hard about whether you are ready to be sexually active. Although there are pros as described above, the cons can be far more serious and affect your entire life (or even end it). If you do decide to be sexually active, make sure to take as many precautions as possible to avoid unwanted pregnancies and the transmission of life-threatening STDs.
There will be a lot of time for this activity in life. You should think about all of the potential consequences before making your decision.
