Studying for a spelling bee can be a fun way to learn new words and join in a fun competition. There are different ways that you can study for such an event. Consider the following tips.
Have someone quiz you
A lot of people find that having someone quiz them is a great way to learn. You can ask someone you know to tell you the words and make you spell it. This can replicate the atmosphere you will have in the actual bee. If you do not have someone to quiz you, then you can make yourself an audio tape (or computer file) to test yourself. You can say the word on the tape and then give yourself a few minutes to spell it.
Use flash cards
Flash cards are a great way to study for a spelling bee. Obviously you cannot write out the words and then try to spell it because you will see it. Instead you could draw a picture of it. For instance, if it is a house, then draw a picture of this on one side and the written word on another.
Practice saying and spelling the words
Keep going over the words again and again. Practice saying and spelling it. Hearing yourself say it might help you to remember it. Also, do not just go over each word once. Once you get a word, you might want to go over them quickly each time so that you make sure that you retain them.
Use mnemonic devices
There are a lot of tricks that you can use to help yourself remember how to spell a word. For instance, if you are trying to remember how to spell the word principal and you keep getting confused with principle, then you can think that a principal is kind of like a “pal” so that is how the word ends. You can try to make a song with the spelling of the words or think about words with similar spellings.
There are many techniques that you can use when studying for a spelling bee. A lot of people find that it is best if they study in many different ways. You should try to start early and give yourself several days to study for it instead of trying to cram everything in at the last minute. Consider the above tips to aid you when preparing for the bee.
