A lot of people spend far too much. You may knowingly do this self-destructive behavior, yet it can be difficult to avoid. Consider the following tricks for cutting down.
Only bring to the store the money you need for the items you are planning to spend
You cannot buy the items if you do not have the money with you. If you need to go to the store for something, then figure how much it is going to cost. Instead of bringing a credit card with a large balance, bring the cash to cover just those expenses. If you see something, you will not be able to get it.
If you see something you want, then say you will absolutely not buy it unless a certain amount of time passes
A lot of people make impulse purchases. You may see something, immediately get this feeling that you need to have it or the world will end, shell out the cash, and get home to find that you now have something you do not need that will take up space. You can try to reduce your spending by cutting down on this impulse spending. Make a rule that you will wait before buying something. It can be an hour, a day, a week or whatever you think will be long enough so that you will only end up buying the things that you truly feel like you need.
Do a careful analysis of each item before you purchase it
Instead of just buying something, you need to think about it. In your mind say the pros and cons or each item. Imagine when you would use it and exactly how much time you would use it for. You can even bring a little piece of paper and a notepad with you to the store and force yourself to write down these pros and cons. Think about other similar items that you have. Many times you may decide that you truly do not need it.
Make a list of the items you want to put on a wish list instead of buying it
If you feel like you want an item but you need to cut down on your spending, then keep a running list of these things to put on a wish list. You may end up taking some things off of this list as you decide that you do not really need them. Otherwise maybe people will buy them for you for presents.
It is important to control your spending as well as that of your family. Consider the above tricks to aid you in this.
