Whether you want to speak or write better, improving your vocabulary is a noble task. There are many ways that one might go about this. Consider the following ideas.
Read newspapers and books with more complicated vocabulary
One great method that can help you learn new vocabulary is to read books and magazines that contain advanced vocabulary. For instance, try to read The New York Times. This newspaper is filled with high quality writing. You can also find some books written by well-versed authors. When you are reading these, you may want to do so armed with a pocket dictionary (or nearby a dictionary on your computer). As you come across words you do not know, look them up in your dictionary. Alternatively you can watch something on television that utilizes very good vocabulary.
Read books on learning vocabulary
There are many books with the goals of helping you learn vocabulary. These include Vocabulary Book: Learning & Instruction (Language and Literacy Series) by F. Graves and Vocabulary Builder by W. Cornog. Different books have different strategies to help teach you new vocabulary. Some will have lists for you to remember, others will have games and others will have quizzes. Look through the books and read reviews to find the one that is right for you.
Play games that can help build your vocabulary
Some people find that they can learn vocabulary by playing certain games. One great one is Scrabble. You can practice new words and learn those that your opponents play.
Use flash cards
A lot of people find that flash cards can help them learn vocabulary. You can put the word on one side and the meaning on another. You can quiz yourself easily.
Use a computer program
There are different computer programs as well as online websites based on learning new vocabulary. Many people find this to be an easy way to learn since they are so accustomed to the computer to begin with.
Use the new words you learn
Learning new vocabulary is one matter, but retaining them is a different entity altogether. No matter how you learn, you are going to have to take steps to remember the new words. You might want to use them in your everyday speaking. You can also use them in your writing. You can just write out sentences with them. Also, you can quickly go over words you have learned in the past to remind yourself.
There are many ways to increase your vocabulary. Consider the above methods. Combining them may help you learn even faster.
