Do you love the written word? Have you dreamed of making a career as a master wordsmith by sharing information, stories, news and more with readers? A freelance writing career can provide all of this, but it is not for everyone. The following are tips to know if a freelance writing career is for you.
Do you have the ability to write?
Obviously a freelance writer should know how to write effectively. The writing should be grammatically correct and pleasing to read. They should have a good command of the English language and be able to express their points with ease. Readers should not stumble over their prose. It can be difficult to discern whether you are a good writer. You may want to get your work reviewed or join a critique group. One great thing is that this is a skill that can be improved, thus even if you are not skilled enough for a freelance writing career right now that doesn’t mean that it cannot be within your grasp in the future.
Can you meet writing deadlines?
Not all freelance writers have deadlines, but a great deal do. If you cannot finish writing a piece because you have writer’s block or just cannot find the time, then you will have difficulty selling your work. Also, even if you do not have a particular deadline, if you write at too slow a pace, you might not earn enough in order to support a freelance writing career.
Can you keep yourself motivated?
It can be difficult enough to stay on task when we are at work with a hovering boss and without a lot of distractions. Most freelance writers work out of their own home, and you will have to keep yourself motivated to keep writing and not get distracted. You will have to contend with many distractions such as phone calls, e-mails, other people, the television, household work, etc. You will need to be able to set everything else aside so that you can focus on your writing and get things done. You also need to have the time to do it. If you are already overwhelmed with a lot of other things, then you may simply not have the time. However, even a little bit of time might be able to get you started.
Freelance writing can provide an opportunity to earn money from something you love. Consider the above tips to help you decide whether this field is for you.
