Important Details to look for when doing Employee Background Checks

Employee background checks are a useful tool to find out if there is something objectionable in a potential employee’s history. Many people portray themselves in a very positive light and do not disclose important details about their past that may make them unsuitable for the company. You may want to look for the following important details when doing such checks.
Criminal history
It is extremely important to find out if the potential employee has any criminal convictions against them. Such convictions do not have to necessarily preclude against you hiring them but you should be aware of them so that you can make the decision if they are the right fit for your company.
You will want to specifically look at the type of conviction. You should be extremely careful about hiring anyone who has been convicted of some sort of violent crime against someone else. There have been many cases of workplace violence, and you do not want that to happen to you. People can change, however, so you can look at when the case occurred and how honest the person was about it. Even if they did not actually harm someone you can look at cases where they may have threatened others. If someone has a restraining order against them, then you could consider whether that would play a part in your decision for instance.
A company may also be interested in any criminal history of theft, especially if the person will be dealing with money. If your potential new cashier has robbed many convenience stores, for instance, then you may have a strong worry that they may repeat the behavior within your company. You should also look for other white collar crime if you are in a big business where the person would have the same opportunities.
Drug use
Most companies do not want to hire someone who has a current drug problem. Not only can it affect their behavior or performance, but it can affect the company. For instance, if they bring drugs to the company premises, then there can be serious ramifications. If the customer deals with the public and does something bad because of the drug use you can get a reputation that is difficult to live down. However, remember that people can overcome these addictions so you can consider when it was.
You will want to do as thorough an employee background check as possible to spot any potential red flags. Use your judgment in every case to see how the potential employee would work for you.
