Working for yourself might sound like a dream, however before you quit your job you should be aware of the disadvantages that it does pose. You will want to be sure that the advantages outweigh these before making any drastic decisions. The following are some of the disadvantages of working for yourself.
You will not get the benefits that many companies offer to their employees
There are many benefits that companies offer that you will not get working for yourself. One of these is the health insurance, and obviously that will be changing soon with the new legislation just passed. However, it still might be cheaper and easier to get health insurance through your employer. In addition to insurance, there are other benefits that companies offer. They may offer retirement plans where they match money for you. They may also provide other things that you cannot get working for yourself. Make sure that you can afford to give these up.
If business goes bad, it will all be on you
If you work for a company and there is a slow time the company can often weather it without the employees feeling it at all. When you work for yourself you might feel all of the good, but then you will feel all of the bad as well. For some people this can be very difficult, and some small businesses will even fail in a bad month whereas a bigger place could weather the storm. If business suddenly goes bad you might not have money to pay for your rent or so forth (if you depend that much on the money). Make sure to be aware of these risks.
You might have to do all of the work
Unless you have a larger business with employees, everything will be on you. You may have to stay up late and work on the weekends if it needs to be done because no one else will do it. You might not be able to take time off while you are getting yourself established. You may have to work very hard or many more hours than you would in a regular job. You might not be able to take off time when you are sick.
Working for yourself can be very advantageous, however there are disadvantages as well and you need to be aware of all of these. Consider the above points when deciding whether it is right for you.
