Listen to vocabulary CDs
This is a great activity because you can do it in your car as you drive, while you are on public transportation, or during other times that would have been otherwise wasted. There are different CDs that you can purchase to help you learn French vocabulary. If you wish to save money then you can easily make your own. For instance, just record yourself saying a French word, pausing and then saying the English word (or you can do the English first). Listening to these over and over again can help you to learn new French vocabulary.
Flash cards
You may have used these in elementary school, and they can still be useful now as you learn French vocabulary. Again, there are ones you can purchase but you can easily make your own. Just write the French word on one side and the English word (or a picture) on the other. This will also help you learn how the French words are spelled.
Computer programs
There are many computer programs such as Rosetta Stone, which can help you improve your French vocabulary. In Rosetta Stone, they show you pictures and you have to come up with the word. They also allow you to practice speaking it, too. There are many websites that also offer free instruction.
Speak with someone who speaks French
If you know of anyone who speaks French, then conversing with them can be a great way to learn French vocabulary. Immersion is usually considered the best way to learn.
Watch television programs in French
You can watch television programs that are in French that are dubbed in English. You will hear the words and see what they mean. It can help you pick up new words.
Read materials in French
You can read books, newspaper and magazines in French with a dictionary next to you. When you come across a word you do not know, then look it up. You can try to read the same paragraphs over again to help reinforce the words.
The best way might be to learn new French vocabulary in a variety of the above ways. With a multifaceted approach, you will soon expand your knowledge of this popular language.
