Tips for Moving an Elderly Parent Into Your Home
Many people choose to move their elderly parents into their home. This can be a very nice thing to do, yet there are different considerations you will need to make. The following are some tips for moving an elderly parent into your home.
Make sure that the home is safe for him or her and can accommodate any special needs he or she has
Someone who is elderly might have difficulty with some basic tasks such as walking or using the restroom. You will want to make sure that you accommodate for this. For instance, if he or she uses a walker you will want to make sure that there is enough space for him or her to get by places. You want to make sure that there is a not a lot of stuff on the floor that he or she could trip on. You also want to make sure that it is safe for him or her to use the facilities and make any adjustments as necessary. Of course, make sure that the bed is safe for him or her as well. Your parent’s safety is vital, and you will want to make sure that it is as safe as can be for them. If they are going to be alone sometimes, you could even consider one of those necklaces where they can push a button and get help no matter where they are.
Carefully consider what you should bring over
Think about all of the items that he or she owns and what should be brought over. More than likely he or she is moving from a larger space into a smaller one, and you might have to cut down on the amount of items to fit. Obviously, you can get rid of items that are repetitive (if he or she had pots and pans that you have as well). You should have him or her make these decisions if he or she is competent because you do not want to accidentally discard something that was important to him or her. If he or she really does not want to items thrown away, your can see if someone else in the family would take them or even just get a storage space so that he or she can still keep the items and even switch them out occasionally.
Make sure to listen to your parent
If he or she is incompetent then you obviously can’t do this. Otherwise try to give your parent some control over his or her new situation. Decorate the room so that he or she feels like it is home. It is probably more difficult on them than it is on you.
Moving an elderly parent into your home can be quite a task, but it can go well if you are meticulous and consider your parent’s feeling. Consider the above tips to aid you in this.
