39 Words: 6 Tips for Handling Jealousy at Workplace
2482 Words: 469
It can be difficult when one person is jealous at another in the workplace. It can lead to all sorts of problems, especially if one person acts out against the other person. There are different things that you can do to try to handle this sort of behavior.
Ignore it
Sometimes the best thing to do is to actually ignore such behavior. A lot of times, it will die down if you do not let it bother you. Some people who are jealous might try to start arguments or get a rise in temper out of the other person. You cannot allow him or her to do that and they cannot make you upset if you don’t let them. After time passes, he or she may calm down and the situation may resolve itself.
Talk about it
In some cases, the best thing to do is to get everything out in the open. You can talk to the person to discuss why he or she feels that way. You can talk about what needs to be done in order to resolve the situation. Sometimes there are solutions, which would make everyone happy. Perhaps he or she is jealous of something you do not even care about. For instance, perhaps you have a specific task that you would just as soon not do, but maybe they really want to do it. It might not be a big deal if they take it over. In that way, sometimes talking it out can solve the problem of jealousy. Other times, the boss might just have to have a talk about how it is impacting the office and needs to stop. It is not fair for one person to make a difficult office environment for everyone. Even if they are jealous or upset, sometimes they need to just find a way to handle it without letting it impact their work or other people. The boss may have to speak with him or her to get him to do that.
Change something so that the person is not jealous
Sometimes a person is jealous because they feel that someone else is getting attention, projects, etc. See if there is something special that you can give that person that would negate the feelings of jealously. Sometimes it isn’t even a tangible thing that they are jealous of. Maybe you pay more attention to someone else or notice someone else’s work more. Sometimes just getting a little attention will be enough to appease the person and get rid of the unhealthy jealousy. Try to think of creative ways to solve this problem.
Obviously if it gets to the point in which someone really disturbs the entire office and won’t change or, of course, if someone gets violent, the boss might need to take more drastic actions.
