: How having Work Experience is Beneficial to your Job Search
:
(420 Words)
When an employer sits you down to interview you, one of the first questions out of his mouth will likely be related to your work experience. Most employers place heavy consideration on this, and it is often the difference in whom gets the position. There are many ways in which this experience is beneficial to your job search.
Employers will often require a certain amount of work experience
Some employers will not even consider someone without work experience. There are different reasons for this. First, they may not have interest in training someone on how to do a job. In many fields, there is quite a bit to learn and it can be very pricey and time consuming to train. They may need someone who can get started right away on the job without a lot of lag time. Potential employers often list the required work experience on their advertisements and they may weed out any resumes that do not include this. You may therefore have far more jobs that you are qualified for, and the more jobs that you can apply to the more chance that you will get one.
You may perform better on the job interview
If you have work experience, then you might be able to do a better interview. When someone asks you a field-related question you might be able to better answer it if you have experience in the field. You can go into examples about how you dealt with similar situations. That is going to look far more impressive than someone sprouting off information from a textbook where they learned about it in school. The potential employer might feel like they can relate to you more because you have handled the job. They also may feel that you will better be able to handle any problems that arise if you have faced the challenges of the job before.
You may know of someone in the field who can help you get a job
When you work in a certain field you may know other local people within the same field. A lot of people get jobs through the people that they know. They may be familiar with your work and feel that you would make a welcome addition to either their company or that of someone that they know. This can be your “in” to getting a job.
For many reasons, work experience can be beneficial in your job search. You will want to highlight this as much as possible on your resume.
