(545 Words)
The summer is a wonderful time of year when everyone can get out and enjoy the weather. You want your infant to enjoy his first summer season, however there are a number of safety precautions you should consider in order to safeguard your child.
Protect your child from the heat of the sun
It can be extremely hot in the summer. You do not want your child to overheat. Many parents dress their children warmer than adults because they lose body heat, but the combination of the hot temperature and the extra layers might not be good.
Always keep an eye on how hot your child is. If he or she appears to be hot, then take him or her inside. Do not keep him or her out in the sun too long. Try to find shade. Dress him or her appropriately considering the weather and his or her age. Talk to your pediatrician to find out the exact way to dress your child based on the weather in your area and your child’s exact age and circumstances.
Protect your child from dehydration
You do not want your infant to get dehydrated because it is hot. You should breastfeed more. In most cases it is not recommended to give an infant any water – instead just give the nutrient rich breast milk or formula.
Protect your child’s skin
In most cases infant babies are not supposed to wear sunscreen until they are six months old. There might be some appropriate for younger infant, but talk to your pediatrician before using it and read the directions on the bottle to make sure it is safe for young infants. Because of this, you need to make sure to keep your child out of the sun so that he or she does not sustain a sun burn. You can keep him or her in shade. Use an umbrella and a large sun hat to protect him or her.
Water safety
Of course you might take your child swimming in the summer, and there are some special precautions associated with that. Always supervise your child when near water. Do not leave him or her for even a second because that is all it takes for tragedy to occur. Even if your infant cannot roll or scooch yet, you never know when it is the first time.
Bring everything you need right near you, such as the towel, a phone, etc. so that you do not need to leave. If you absolutely must go somewhere, then take your child with you. Also, while you are there make sure you are actually watching your child at every second. Do not go on the phone because you might get distracted. Children have drowned at pool parties.
Carefully consider what water activities to do with your infant. Even in the heat of the summer, the water might be cold and your infant could get quickly chilled. Keep watching your child for any signs that he or she is cold. Make sure to only bring your child in the water where you are comfortable. Don’t bring him or her to the deep end where you cannot stand.
Keep your child safe in the summer. Follow the above safety precautions to enjoy the summer in safety.
