(410 Words)
Ear infections occur frequently in children. Some children may get one after the next. It is best if you can ascertain when your child is suffering from such a condition to evaluate the best next course of action. Different children have different symptoms, and the following are some common indicators of an ear infection in children.
Ear pain
When a child has an ear infection, it is often painful. If they are old enough to speak they may complain of pain in the ears. You can ask them about it, of course. If they are too young to speak then they may be crying in pain. They also may reach for and pull at their ears. The pain from an ear infection can range depending on the child and the particular infection.
Crankiness
The children may generally not feel well. They may act fussy or cranky. They may act out of character.
Fever
Some children with ear infections get fevers. The intensity of it can range. It may be a low grade fever, but some children get very high fevers with these. They may then display the symptoms of a fever such as being cold, sensitivity, etc.
Feeling of ears being plugged
Obviously you will not be able to ascertain this in a child too young to speak. An older child, however, may be able to describe such a feeling to you. They may feel like they are not hearing as well as they normally do. They may describe it as feeling like there is water or something else in their ears.
Difficulty sleeping
The pain and discomfort from an ear infection and its related symptoms may make it difficult for some children to sleep. They may cry at night.
Thick, yellow discharge from the ears
Sometimes an ear infection is accompanies by a discharge or thick, yellow fluid. This does not mean that there is a serious problem.
If you believe your child has an ear infection you may want to bring him or her to the pediatrician for an evaluation. Some ear infections require antibiotics, but many will heal on their own. If the child has many recurrent ear infections sometimes they will recommend further measure such as tubes in the ears to help prevent it from happening. Sometimes a child will have most of the above symptoms whereas other times they may show hardly any symptoms at all. Consider the above indicators of this condition.
