A basement does not have to be an empty shell, sitting there with no real purpose or use. With work you can turn a basement into an extremely useable space. It can extend the living area of your home substantially.
Get it finished for whatever use you have in mind
First you need to consider what you want to use it for and the amount of finishing that would be required. If it is already finished then you can just decide. If it needs work then think about your budget for such a project and possible uses. For instance, if you want to make it a storage area, then you will not need to worry about making the walls and floors beautiful whereas if it is going to be a playroom for your kids, then it is going to need much more work.
There are many different things that must be done to finish a basement. You will need to put in flooring and walls. You may need to add electrical outlets and lighting. If you have areas that contain pipes, wiring or other hazards, then make sure that these are cordoned or walled off.
Decide on a use
You need to now decide what you want to use your basement for, and there are many choices. A basement makes a great play area for your kids. A basement provides a spacious place for your children while keeping the toys out of sight of you and your guests.
Another great use for a basement is to make a hobby room. If you have arts and crafts that you like to do, then you can make your inspiration come alive in your basement.
A basement can also be a game room. You can put in a pool table, air hockey table, ping pong table and/or a pinball machine. It can be a place for fun and enjoyment.
A home gym is another great option for a basement. You might not want everyone seeing your gym equipment, and this can keep it out of the way.
There are practically endless choices for a basement. It can also be used for a home office, a guest apartment , a library or a movie screening room.

Once you know what you want, bring your vision to fruition. Bring in furniture and equipment for your room. Make a plan, create a budget and then do it yourself or hire a contractor if necessary.
