How to Divide a Room
You want a divide a room, yet you do not have the money, means and/or desire to hire a contractor to actually build a wall. Fortunately, there are many other ways that you can divide a room that are easy, attractive and inexpensive.
Curtains
Use curtains to divide a room with almost no cost. Install a bar or pole to the ceiling. For a cheaper alternative, you can just put hooks up in the ceiling to hold the curtains.
There are practically countless numbers of curtains to choose from. You will find a wide variety at stores such as Bed, Bath and Beyond. You can buy something fancy such as white chiffon for an elegant look. You can use window curtains that are the right size or even an attractive shower curtain. Alternatively, simply go to the store and buy fabric that is the perfect size for your needs. You can then use binder clips or hooks at the top to hang it. You can change the curtain if you want to alter the look of the room. Another benefit is that you can pull the curtain aside when you do not want the room divided.
Furniture
Tall furniture can both provide a practical function and serve to divide a room. You can get tall pieces such as armoires or wall units. Of course, make sure that the back looks attractive if you will be viewing it from one room. You can also add something to the back to make it more attractive such as paneling or you can have pieces on each side, which stand back to back against each other. If you want to divide the room but do not mind if people can see back and forth, then you can use furniture that is not tall.
Dressing room screen
Use dressing room screens to divide your room in an attractive manner. They make many different screens. Some have an Oriental inspiration, while others have room for you to put photographs. You can use one or a series of them depending on your needs. These are very good because they can be easily taken up or down in a moment. Most of them fold up and can be stored in a closet when they are not needed.
There are many different ways that you can divide a room without the permanent effects of making a wall. Consider the above ideas when designing your space.
