How to do a Background Check on a Contractor
It is very important to find a reputable and experienced contractor. You are spending a lot of money, and you want the job done right. This is especially important with work where safety can be an issue such as electrical work. Of course a contractor can claim to be the most experienced person out there, but you want to do your own research to make sure that he has the experience and reputation that he says he does.
You can start your quest into this by looking for a contractor from a recommendation. If you can find someone who you know has done a good job for someone else then you will know that he at least has that experience.
You want to make sure that the contractor is licensed as required by law. Ask to see the contractor’s license and write down the number. You should then call the state licensing board and validate that the license is valid. They may also have information about whether there are any complaints.
Ask the contractor about insurance. You can also try to check to make sure the policy is valid.
Ask the contractor for references. You can call the references or actually go to see the work. For instance, if a painter worked on a public building you might be able to go see it. You should at least ask to see pictures.
You should go on to the Better Business Bureau website and research what comes up in relation to the contractor. They will give general information about complaints that have been filed and the resolution. Do not go with someone that has a real bad reputation. Of course one bad thing might not mean that the contractor is definitely a problem but you will want to be more wary.
You should also perform an Internet search for the person’s name. You may find reviews or information online where people wrote about the contractor. Look at both the positive things and the negative reviews.
There are many local websites where people can leave information about contractors. This may depend on where you are and the specific type of contractor. Look online to see what information is available.
Do a thorough investigation into each contractor that you find. Be very careful if you find red flags. By taking the time to do research, you will increase your chances of a successful job.
