Monopoly
Monopoly has been entertaining families since 1934. This game generally costs under $20, but can be played for a long time. Players roll the dice to navigate around the rectangular board. They buy and sell properties around Atlantic city. You exchange money to buy properties and to pay rent. You can buy houses and hotels to increase your money intake.
Dealing with money can help teach children about money and mathematics. Luck and chance play a large part in the game but so does strategy. They also make a children’s version of this game, which is appropriate for families with younger kids.
Scrabble
Scrabble is a word game that can help everyone, young or old, develop their vocabulary. The game consists of a board and tiles of all of the different levels. Players have to form words in a crossword like fashion. The more difficult-to-place letters such as Q garner more points, and you get extra points by stepping on bonus spots on the 225 square board. The person with the most points after all of the tiles are used wins.
Trivial Pursuit
Trivial Pursuit is a great game with trivia questions. They make several versions that have easier questions for the kids and harder questions for the adults, which makes it a great game in which the parents and children can actually compete against each other. They also make many special editions for families that are interested in a certain subject. You move around a board and collect wedges when you successfully answer a question in the right category.
Yahtzee
Yahtzee is a fun game of chance, strategies and probabilities. Played with five dice, players need to fill in their cards by getting certain patterns on the dice. For instance, in one spot they add up all of the 5’s they get, in another they get a score if they get all of the same number and so forth. The person with the most points wins the game. It can help children develop their mathematical skills and is a fun, quick, easy and inexpensive game for everyone in the family.
There are many great games that the entire family can enjoy. A party game such as Scattergories can get everyone up and excited. Other include Clue and Taboo.
