Advantages and Disadvantages between a Nanny and Daycare
(481 Words)
When parents have to work, or otherwise cannot care for their children during the day, then they have a major decision to make on who is to care for their child. Two of the most common solutions include a daycare and a private nanny. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.
Cost
Cost is one of the major factors when choosing between a daycare and a private nanny. In general, private nannies cost far more than daycares do. You will be paying this person’s entire salary, and it can be tens of thousands of dollars a year. In a daycare, the cost is spread out among many children, and the cost is far less. Many parents couldn’t afford to hire a private nanny but can afford a daycare. Also, the more children you have, the less of a difference you will see between the two because the price of a nanny might not go up that much with multiple children but the price of the daycare will typically be multiplied by the number of kids (minus a generally small sibling discount).
Individual attention
There is no doubt that children who have private nannies get more individualized attention. The nanny only has that child to focus on and can give him or her attention all the time. Nannies can cater services to the child’s exact needs. The child will get his or her diaper changed right away instead of needing to wait for it to be noticed. The child will always have someone to pay attention to him or her. The nanny can tailor activities to the child. For instance, if the child loves animals then the nanny can take him or her to the zoo and read books focused on animals. He or she can also work on skills with the child.
In a daycare, the providers must split their time between the numerous children. Your child will not be able to pick out the book to be read and may not always have someone’s attention. He or she will have to follow along with the activities picked out by the center.
Outings
In general, children go on far more outings when with a nanny. The nanny can take him or her wherever you specify. In most daycares, the children generally spend most of the day in the center.
Socialization
While in a daycare, children are surrounded by other kids. This gives them a great deal of time for socialization. A private nanny can also provide these opportunities by taking him or her to places with other kids, but he or she will not always be surrounded by other kids like in a daycare.
Choosing between a daycare and a nanny is an important task. Parents should consider pros and cons and research the options available in their local area when making the decision that is right for them and their child.
