: Advantages and Disadvantages to Shopping at Costco

Costco is a great place to shop. There are both advantages and disadvantages to shopping at this giant warehouse store. The following is a discussion of these.
Advantages
You can save money
A lot of people like to shop at Costco because you can save money. Sometimes the items are considerably cheaper. For instance, you can get veggie trays that are usually much less than the traditional grocers. Also, you can save a lot of money on organic frozen blueberries. When the holidays come they sell pre-packaged gift baskets that are usually great deals. They sell cakes for $16.99 that feed 48 people, which is much cheaper than you will find at most bakeries. They are not cheaper on everything, so you will have to price compare, but they provide a lot of savings.
They often have innovative items
Costco often has items that you cannot find elsewhere. For instance, many grocers do not sell pico de gallo, but Costco does.
Disadvantages
You may have to buy in large quantities
A lot of the items at Costco come in large quantities. For instance, you may have to buy a much larger container of sour cream than you need. If you do not need that much of an item then it might be a waste. This is especially true if the item is perishable and you end up throwing part of it out. Even if you are going to use it, it can just be a hassle to have to store such big containers.
Miscellaneous disadvantages
Some people find it inconvenient that you do not get bags when you check out. It may be harder to load your car and bring things into the house. Also, the environment is not as nice as a lot of stores. You feel like you are in a warehouse. Also, they check your receipt as you leave. A lot of people are insulted by this and would rather shop somewhere that didn’t require that. Also, there are other stores that are more full service. You do not have a lot of salespeople walking around ready to help, for instance. Although they sell clothes, there is nowhere to try them on. You also have to pay an annual fee to shop there. You cannot pay with most credit cards, which a lot of people find inconvenient.
Costco is a nice place to shop, but it is not right for everyone. Consider the above advantages and disadvantages when deciding whether it is for you.
