The first thing to remember is that this adopted child will now be part of the family. They will not be a semi-member; they will be as part of it just like the rest of the family. When you make the decision to adopt, you are making the decision that you will open your heart and your home to this child. Before you even have the child move in, you may want to have a family meeting to explain the situation and the importance of making the child feel as wanted as possible to everyone else. Of course it is also important to make sure that the children already in the family understand that they are no less loved or important.
When the child comes into the family, you may want to do something special to celebrate. It is a wonderful occasion. You can encourage your children to be giving to this child. For instance, you can go with your children to pick out a gift for the new child. That may help them feel more involved in the process.
You want the family to be able to spend some quality time together doing “normal” family things. Plan quality events together. You can spend some time playing games, for instance, if the children are older. You want your current kids to feel like they are on the same “side” as the adopted child, thus you may want to give them something to do together. They could be on the same team in a family board or sports game. You can buy a project that they can work together on.
It is important for everyone to have a voice in the family. You can have a family meeting to discuss how the family will blend as far as responsibilities. If the child is older and will be taking some of the responsibilities, then your kids may be happy for the help. Make sure that all members of the family feel like they can communicate their feelings, no matter what they are. Some people will also go to family counseling to help ease the transition.
The most important thing when blending adoptive children into a family is to give it time. Sometimes it takes time to get into a family. The fact the child is adopted should be a thing of the past. With time and effort, you will soon be complete unit.
