A mystery shopper depends on anonymity. The entire point is that you want to be able to record the experience of a normal customer, not one who is going to review or evaluate the store and who should be treated special. Unfortunately, sometimes a mystery shopper will get found out, either by circumstances within or beyond her control. The following are some tips on what to do if you think you’ve been discovered as a mystery shopper.
Act like normal
The first thing you might want to do is to act like normal. You may have been acting different than the other shoppers and this is why you might have been found out. It might not be too late to start acting like everyone else. Just try to lose yourself in the situation. Pretend that you are really there on a regular shopping trip just looking at things. The person who discovered you might change their minds about you. Try to do things you do not think a mystery shopper would do, and act just like normal.
Come back later or go to a different store
You may decide that you just were not successful this time. It might be worth it just to leave so that you can come back later. If you do decide to leave you might try to come back when the person who discovered you isn’t there so that hopefully no one will remember you. If you are looking in a chain store and there are other stores of the same chain, then you might just want to go to a different one of the stores.
Take the results that you get with the proverbial grain of salt
The information you get as a mystery shopper can lose its value if the store employees found that that you are a mystery shopper. They might treat you differently or act differently. You might not get the same experience that you would have gotten if you were a regular shopper. Since the whole point of being a mystery shopper is to get the typical experience you are going to want to be very careful about reading any information that you get after you think that you have been compromised. You might not get an accurate view of what you want to look at.
It can be a challenge to continue after you think you have been discovered as a mystery shopper. Consider the above tips when facing this situation.
