“What have you got in there? A ton of bricks?”
“Did you bring the kitchen sink with you?”
“You’re just going on vacation, not moving there!”
Does this sound familiar? Many people are “packing-light-challenged,” destined to take everything they need times three on any vacation. It can be a real problem, especially nowadays when airlines are slamming people with surcharges for extra luggage. Fortunately, you can learn to pack light. The following are some tips for doing so.
Bring clothes that you can mix and match
You might be able to get multiple outfits out of few items if you bring things that you can mix and match. For instance, you may have a blouse that would work good with jeans for a casual look, good with a plain skirt for a business casual look, and good with a fancy skirt for a dressier look. This may save you items to pack but still give you the variety you want.
Think about how much you really need
You do not have to bring everything so that you can decide there what you are going to wear. If packing light is important, then decide beforehand what you are going to wear and then bring only that. Also, think about what extras you really need. Although bringing extra can be reasonable in the case that something gets dirty or lost, many people bring far more than is actually necessary. Also, think about items you may wear multiple times such as jackets or sweaters.
Think about whether you will have access to a washing machine and then pack accordingly
Many times you will be in easy access of laundry facilities wherever you are. If so, you might want to take advantage and pack lighter because of it. If you will be able to wash your clothes, then you do not necessarily need to bring for the entire trip. This can save you a lot of space when you pack. Also, you may need to bring less “emergency” or extra clothes if you can just wash something if something happens to what you are wearing.
Bring less bulky clothes
Obviously, some of this will depend on the weather and you might not have a choice. However, let’s say you are going to a black tie dance and you can bring a slinky dress or a large ruffled dress, then you might want to consider the smaller, slinky one. Some items of clothes are just bigger and have more to them (besides what you need for cold or inclement weather). You might want to choose the smaller items.
