Being a good boss can be tricky. It is not always cut and dry as to how one should act because every situation is so different. A good boss can possess a variety of different qualities, and his or her behavior will depend on many factors such as the industry, the people that he or she is supervising, his personality and other factors. Qualities that are characteristic of an effective boss include the following.
Inspires people to work well
A good boss should be able to inspire people to work well. Notice that the word is inspire and not scare or cajole. A good boss should be able to motivate the employees to do a good job because they want to, not because they are forced. He or she can help them see the good in what they are doing, no matter what it is. Obviously, even a great boss cannot convince everyone, but he or she should be able to motivate those who can be motivated.
Deals well with people
A good boss is able to deal well with people. When problems arise, he or she should be adept at diffusing the situation without having it blow up. People should feel comfortable coming to him or her with issues, and he or she should be good at taking care of things.
Dedicated to the job
Workers often have trouble being dedicated to their jobs if their boss is not dedicated. A lot of times you lead best by example. If you show that you are willing to go the extra mile for the work, then others will too. If you are not interested then many of the workers will wonder why they should be.
Is not a pushover
A good boss should not let the workers get away with whatever they want. When this happens, productivity often suffers. Hopefully they will be liked by the employees, but it shouldn’t be because they give the employees whatever they want. They should be fair, and listen to complaints and issues, but then they should make a reasonable and logical decision.
Fair to people
It is best when a boss is fair because people will often notice if he or she is not. He or she should not play favorites because this can build resentment very fast. Of course, it is important that a boss not discriminate against certain type of people or take advantage of his or her position of power to do something wrong.
A good boss may boost productivity and create a positive atmosphere while being liked by his or her subordinates. Again, there are some workers who will never conform, but it is amazing the difference a good boss can make. The above characteristics are some he or she may possess.
