Qualities to look for in a Nonprofit Volunteer
Many nonprofit organizations utilize the use of volunteers. They can provide the work you need without the cost you simply cannot afford. Some businesses truly depend on them. Consider the following qualities to look for in such a volunteer.
Someone who is dependable
Just because you are a nonprofit business does not mean that you don’t need dependable people. You might have deadlines and work that needs to be done by a certain time and if your volunteers do not come in when they say they are going to then you could have a problem. You can talk to potential nonprofit volunteers to try to get an idea of their dependability.
Someone who takes the work seriously
The work of a nonprofit is just as serious if not more so than a traditional business. Instead of the goal of making money, a nonprofit is working to provide some good to the world. The nonprofit volunteers should take the work just as seriously. It should be someone who will work efficiently and effectively, not someone who will goof off or just use it as a social activity. They should do the work that needs to be done and meet the reasonable deadlines.
Someone that has the availability the nonprofit needs
Different nonprofits have different time needs from their volunteers. They should look for someone who can work when they need and put in the amount of hours required. If they have trouble finding this then they can look for several people to fill the position.
Someone who has the skills, experience and abilities to do a good job
Just because you are looking for a nonprofit volunteer does not mean that you can take just anyone. Depending on the job you will need someone with certain skills. For instance, an organization that needs someone to help with organizing will need someone with those skills. Many nonprofit volunteers work with people such as children or the elderly, and those people must be able to have good interaction with them. Think about the skills you need and what might be available in a nonprofit volunteer.
There are many different attributes that you will want to look for when choosing a nonprofit volunteer. You can continue to evaluate the person after they start, and remember that you can break the relationship and look for someone else if it just isn’t working out. Consider the above factors when making your selection.
