If you are not much of a baker, then you can get one of the mixes in a box, and then you will have very little to do besides adding a few ingredients and sticking it in the oven.
Decide on a design
The designs you can have on a birthday cake are limitless. Obviously a lot will depend on the age, gender and preferences of the birthday star. You will probably make a far different cake for a four-year-old girl as compared to a sixty-year old man. They sell a lot of specialty pans that will make the cake in a specific shape. This can be especially good for children. For instance, you can get cake pans that make the shape of a princess, a butterfly, a flower, etc. Alternatively, you can think of your own design for the top. Bake the cake

Put on the icing and design
Make sure it is ready for icing before you start. You do not want it to be too hot and the icing to get ruined. You can purchase some of the tools for putting on icing from the store.
