An assisted living facility can provide meaningful employment for a variety of positions. The experience you will need to apply for such a job will vary depending on the facility as well as your field, yet there are certain things that employers will be looking for. The following is experience needed to apply for assisted living jobs.
Experience working with senior citizens
If you are applying for a job where you will be in contact with the residents (and many of the jobs will have at least some contact) then it will be advantageous to have experience working with seniors before. It would be especially good if you have worked in a similar environment such as a different assisted living facility. It can be a challenge for a lot of the residents to be in an assisted living facility, and many of them are facing physical, mental or emotional difficulties. There are different ways that you can interact with them that will make things better for them and for you and make the relationship more successful. Some of this ability to interact comes naturally to people while other times you just learn through experience on what works and what doesn’t work when working with seniors in an assisted living facility. You will have a better chance of getting a job if you can show experience in this. Even if you have not worked in this setting before, any related experience might be useful and worth mentioning on your application.
Job specific experience
Much of the other experience necessary to apply for a position in an assisted living facility will be based on the particular job. For instance, if you are applying to work in planning, coordinating and running the activities in the assisted living facility, then you would want to have similar experience planning activities. Ideally you would have done the same position at a different assisted living facility, however any related experience could be useful. If you are working in the kitchen, then culinary experience elsewhere would be useful. If you are a nurse or an assistant, then medical experience is what they might be looking for when they look through the applications of those who have applied. It will depend on what you are going to be doing.
There are many good jobs at an assisted living facility. Consider the above points when considering whether to apply for such a position.
