It can be challenging to decide who should come to your wedding, especially when you have distant relatives. There is not necessarily a yes or no answer that will work for everyone because it will depend upon your specific situation. Consider the following points when deciding whether to invite distant relatives to your wedding.
How close are you with the relative?
Some of us have distant relatives that we never talk to or see. We might barely recognize them were we to pass in the street. Others might have relatives that are distant family-wise but whom they keep in touch with. Obviously, you will be more likely to invite the person with whom you have a relationship.
How big of a wedding are you having?
The bigger it is, the more it will be appropriate for you to invite distant relatives. If you are having a small wedding and inviting only close family and friends, then such a person could easily be excluded. If you are having a gigantic wedding and inviting everyone and their brother, then you might be more likely to include the distant relatives in the guest list. Of course, many people have medium sized weddings.
How many people would you have to invite if you invited one?
Oftentimes, when you invite one person, you will feel obligated to invite more. For instance, let’s say you have twelve cousins that are all about the same distance from you. It might make sense for you to invite all or none of them. In that case, you might be less likely to invite them because of how many there are. Alternatively let’s say you just have three. That might not be a big deal so you might include them. You should look at whom else you have already invited because that might make you feel more or less obligated to invite them as well.
Will there be bad feelings if you do not invite them?
Sometimes people invite distant relatives to a wedding so as to avoid a family feud. Some people expect to be invited to weddings. Obviously, it is your wedding, and ultimately you should do what you want, but be careful about starting a problem that could last for ages. People can hold grudges for a long time. You also might want to consider if he or she invited you to his or her wedding.
It can be difficult to decide whether to invite distant relatives to your wedding. Consider the above factors when making your decision.
