Oftentimes it can take a little while to make a regularly scheduled well appointment with a pediatrician. Yet when your child wakes up and is absolutely miserable you do not want to have to wait days or weeks to get an appointment. Most parents will want to bring him or her in immediately, and many pediatricians’ offices will accommodate this. The following are reasons why it is important to choose a pediatrician who can give you a last-minute appointment.
You do not want your child to be miserable
When we are sick, we are often miserable. It can be especially difficult for children. Usually the doctor will know what to do in order to help the child feel better. Oftentimes it is medicine. They may need a prescription medicine or they may need an over-the-counter medicine. Even if medicine is not needed, there might be other things that can be helpful in making the children feel better. For however long they wait to get an appointment, they might be unhappy for just that much longer.
They can evaluate if it is serious
Sometimes there are serious things that need immediate attention. A parent may not always be able to tell when this is the case. Sometimes even waiting for a day could be detrimental to the child. It is good to have a doctor that is willing to get you an appointment so that you can be checked out. Sometimes they might need emergency treatment, and their lives can literally be saved. The health of your child is too important to wait.
It may stop something from getting worse
Even if you are not in an emergency situation, being able to get in quickly may help stop an illness from getting worse. For instance, let’s say your child has a mild ear infection. If you let it go it may get worse and worse, resulting in your child being uncomfortable or getting a really bad ear infection. Sometimes something can become really serious if you let it go.
It may force you to go to an urgent care center/emergency room
You may choose to go to an urgent care center instead, which can cost more, expose you to more disease, have a longer wait and just be a much bigger deal. Many times a pediatrician’s visit would be sufficient but you would be forced to go to the urgent care center or emergency room if you cannot get an appointment.
For the above reasons, you may want to try to find a pediatrician who can give you a last-minute appointment.
