: Christmas 2010 Ways to Save Money on Utilities during Christmas

:
(402 Words)
You may spend a lot of money on utilities during Christmas. With everyone tightening their belt this year, even you may need to do so as well. Consider the following money-saving strategies in this area.
Do not have as many holiday lights
Holiday lights are beautiful, however their cost is far more than what you pay for the actual lights themselves. You will pay for the electricity to power them, and this can be significant. You might consider this when picking out which lights to have and how many. Less can be more when you use tasteful decorations anyways. There are many decorations that do not use electricity at all but are still very pretty.
Only keep holiday lights on for a few hours in the evening
Another way to save money without needing fewer lights is to only keep them on for a few hours in the evening. Some people keep them on all the time and this may be usually a big waste of electricity, especially since you usually can’t see them during the day. Also, keeping them on all night is often a waste as well since very few people are out and about in the wee hours of the morning. You can buy timers that allow them to be on for a few hours at night. You can see them as can your neighbors when they are most likely to be driving, but you will spend far less on utilities.
Save money on air conditioning and heating costs
You may be able to save on cooling and heating your house. In some areas like Florida, it may still be warm enough to keep your air on at certain days. You may instead be able to open windows to save money on electricity. In many areas of the country, they will have the heat going. You might be able to dress warmer and avoid this.
Watch for the habits of guests
A lot of people have guests during the Christmas holiday. If they do things that cost a lot on the utilities such as keep lights on or do not turn off faucets all the way then you can mention this to them. You could also just make an effort to turn off the lights and faucets yourself.
You may want to save money any way you can during Christmas. The above techniques may help you save on utilities.
