Costs and Benefits of Globalization

(504 Words)
In today’s modern world, globalization has transcended borders and united people. Individuals and businesses have spread to all corners of the world, spreading cultures and business ventures. There are both costs and benefits to globalization, many of which can be addressed through the right measures.
Advantages
The treasures of the world can reach many people
If globalization did not exist, then much would be missed by the people of the world. Each area has its own treasures, from local produce to innovative business products to artistic creations and more. Without globalization, these would be confined to their homelands. Such treasures should be shared, and it is only through the opening of borders that this can occur. People have been exposed to all sorts of gems through globalization.
Of course, some of these treasures can even save lives such as medical interventions. Doctors can travel to other destinations to aid those who are sick. Plants found in only one place can provide medical magic.
It allows companies to grow
Globalization has allowed companies to reach new heights not available domestically. Many different products appeal to people from all different countries. These companies can increase sales as they enter new markets and provide much-needed or wanted products.
People can help with issues facing other countries
Unfortunately, not all countries are as wealthy and fortunate as the United States. With globalization, people are exposed to the issues other countries face and can provide international aid. For instance, when a large earthquake hit Haiti, relief workers, money and resources poured in from all over the world. They saved countless lives. International workers can make a difference with other issues such as political and environmental problems.
Disadvantages
Countries and citizens are often exploited
Unfortunately, countries and their citizens have been exploited by unscrupulous travelers intent on profit. For instance, America has many strict regulations when it comes to business and worker conditions. Some companies will look to outsource work to other countries and help to perpetrate sweat shops and other unsafe working conditions. They may build unhealthy and unsafe factories and pay workers very little. They may take advantage of a country’s poor situation to perform human rights abuses.
Environmental consequences
Although there can be some good when it comes to globalization and the environment, there is much bad. The good can come when environmental groups such as Greenpeace work against global environmental calamities that would otherwise have been unknown. Negative effects occur when factories produce pollution. Air and water pollution can occur in great amounts, and these can cross borders. Many countries have a poorer system of environmental regulation, and people take advantage of it.
Natural resources can also be victims of globalization. When a business or individual finds something valuable, they may exploit it. Environmental gems can be lost forever.
Globalization has both positive and negative consequences. It is important for everyone to take responsibility for we are all members of one world. With work and effort, the treasures of the world can be preserved and shared.
