(418 Words)
It is very important for women to get the vitamins that they need. The U.S. National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health states that there are thirteen specific vitamins that a woman needs in order to grow correctly. These vitamins include A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins. The B vitamins consist of pantothenic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B-6, niacin, biotin, vitamin B-12 and folate.
There are different ways that a woman may get these essential vitamins, and they vary by vitamin. In most cases all of the vitamins can come from a varied diet with important foods such as vegetables. Vitamins D and K can be made by the body.
Each vitamin has its own important function. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, vitamin A helps with the development of vision as well as the growth and maintenance of cells. Foods with this vitamin include sweet potatoes, spinach and cantaloupe. Vitamin C is important to help women build collagen. It is found in oranges, kiwi and strawberries.
As an antioxidant, vitamin E prevents cell damage. Vitamin D helps in calcium absorption. Egg yolks and liver contain this nutrient. Vitamin K helps keep the bones and tissues healthy by making proteins. Excessive bleeding can occur if there is a deficiency. Green vegetables and dark berries contain vitamin K. The B vitamins have numerous roles including aiding in the production of red blood cells and getting energy from food. Dairy products, eggs, and leafy green vegetables are just a few of the foods that contain it.
A vitamin deficiency can cause severe problems. For instance, rickets can form in women who do not get enough vitamin D, and night blindness can occur in women who do not get enough vitamin A.
It is important to understand that taking a vitamin pill is not generally the same as getting the vitamin from a natural source. It is best to get them from food, but some people may need to take a multivitamin. Certain groups of people such as vegetarians may need to take a B12 or other supplement. According to WebMD, women who are in menopause may need calcium and vitamin D for healthy bones. Folic acid may be needed during pregnancy. Speak to your doctor about what may be right for you.
The right vitamins can help keep a woman healthy. Eating a healthy and balanced diet full of fruits and vegetables is the best way to get the vitamins one needs.
