: Factors that Influence Parenting Styles

(402 Words)
Different people have different styles of parenting. There are many factors that influence this, including the following.
The parenting style of your parents
You may have promised that you would never act like them, and yet many people end up parenting very similarly to their parents. You see what they do and inherently learn that this is how you parent. This parenting style is taught to them for their entire childhood and some may not know any other way to parent. On the other hand, some actually parent differently from their parents on purpose. For instance, if they had an unhappy childhood because their parents were too distant or strict, then they may make a big effort to be as different as possible.
Parenting styles of friends/relative/others
You may also look to the examples set by other parents that you know. If you have a sibling or a close friend that has a child, for instance, then you might watch how they parent and take some things from there. This may be the freshest information on parenting in your mind.
Parenting books
A lot of people read parenting books when they are expecting. Many people are very excited and want all of the information that they can get. They may read a lot of different information or look to a specific expert such as Dr. Spock.
Parenting websites
A lot of people will go onto different websites to learn about parenting. One very popular one is www.babycenter.com, which has extensive bulletin boards about all different types of parenting. Many will read and participate in these boards and may be swayed by them.
Parenting trends
There are different trends that come out in the world of parenting such as when a lot of people switched from physically disciplining their child to using calmer methods such as time outs. These are often explained in newspapers and journals and a lot of people might absorb this material.
Demographics
Different people of different cultures parent differently. Also you will find different trends in different areas, religions and age brackets. Of course this is stereotypical and will not apply to everyone but they can have an influence.
A lot of your parenting techniques just come from your particular personality. Someone who has more of a temper will parent differently from someone who is very calm for instance. The above factors are some that might play a part.
