Fall Prevention Measures for the Elderly
(420 Words)
Falls can be very serious for those who are elderly. A single fall can result in a broken hip or worse, and these can lead to problem after problem. Everything possible should be done to avoid falls in the elderly.
Ensure that the elderly have the devices that they need
Many elderly individuals could benefit from the use of a cane, walker or other assistive device. Those who are elderly should be encouraged to get such devices if they require them. Their doctors or family members should bring it up. Of course, it is important for the elderly to remain active (this can also avoid a fall), so a balance must be found. There should be ways to financially assist the elderly who cannot afford such devices.
If someone does require the use of such a device, then they should be sure to use them. They may be tempted to walk without them for just a moment but then that may be the moment that they fall.
Medications should be given with care
Sometimes those who are elderly fall when they are given a medication that makes them tired, dizzy or slightly off balance. Many medications have such an effect on the elderly. Physicians need to be aware of the medications that carry this property and behave accordingly. The proper preventions should be in place if someone who requires a medication that could affect their alertness or ability to walk.
Handrails and other helpful devices should be installed in private and public places
A handrail can make it much easier for someone who is aged to walk. They should be installed in homes and in public areas whenever possible.
Vision issues should be properly addressed
Many elderly people fall because they cannot see well. They should go in for regular visits to have their eyes checked to make sure that they can see correctly. Corrective glasses should be prescribed when required.
Reduce environmental hazards
Oftentimes, people are “helped” to fall by various environmental hazards. It may be a crack in a sidewalk or something that is left out in a store. These must be addressed to the extent possible. It is especially important for the person’s home to have a neat floor so that there are not items that may be “walking hazards.” Public places should be kept clear and safe.
There are various factors that can increase the risk of a fall for someone who is elderly. The above preventative strategies can make a large difference.
