As a homeowner, the choice of whether to fix or replace an appliance probably comes up on a regular basis. Make sure to consider all of the different factors when deciding which path is right in each situation.
Of course, a big part of this decision is the cost of fixing the appliance versus replacing it. This will depend upon the extent of the problem, the age of the appliance and the cost of a new one. If this is extremely close, then it may be worthwhile for you to replace the appliance. If it is just a fraction of the cost to fix it, then this might be best for you.
One major thing to consider is the energy savings that you would realize with the new appliance. In some cases, you will actually do better financially in the long run by spending the money now to replace your appliance with a newer model that consumes far less energy. Many of the old appliances guzzled up electricity, while the newer ones use only a fraction. Over time, this can translate to a great deal in energy costs. Sometimes you can make back the amount you spend on a new appliance in just a few years, depending on the appliance.
Think about the features that are available on the newer appliances and whether this is important to you. They are always coming out with new features for the different appliances, and many of these make them more efficient, effective and convenient. For instance, you might have a very older fridge that does not have a water dispenser and you would very much like one. Sometimes it is about the shape. For instance, you might prefer the shape that the new refrigerators come in with the double doors and drawers. Look at the features available in the new models and whether they make it worthwhile for you to replace the machine rather than fix it.
There are other miscellaneous reasons why you might choose to replace or fix an appliance. For instance, you might have an appliance that you really love with the features that are perfect for you. You may not be able to replace that appliance exactly and want to stick with your old one. On the other hand, you might want to change the decor of your home and want a new appliance to reflect that. If you’re looking to sell your home in the near future, then you might want to be able to advertise that you have a new appliance.
