Having an upset stomach is no fun, and you want to do all you can to alleviate your symptoms and help yourself feel better. You have to be very careful with what you put into a stomach that is already upset. Many foods that you can normally eat may exacerbate your stomach problems and make you feel worse or make the stomach problems last longer. You should avoid the following foods.
First, you should not have dairy products, according to Everyday Health. Dairy products are not easy for your body to digest. Many people have trouble digesting lactose to begin with, and when your stomach is upset this can make things even worse. There are some dairy products that may be okay to eat if they are lactose free, such as cheese that is hard and yogurt.
Do not eat spicy foods when your stomach is upset. A lot of people get indigestion from them and you may find that your stomach hurts more or that you feel worse. Some people are more sensitive to them than others. Even if you could normally tolerate spicy foods, you’re best sticking with bland while your stomach is upset.
Do not eat foods that contain a lot of acid because this can upset your stomach. Acidic foods include certain fruits like oranges, lemons, grapefruit, and limes. Do not have tomato sauce. Many carbonated beverages have a lot of acid and will also upset your stomach.
Do not eat foods that contain a lot of fat because these will make your digestive tract contract. This may cause diarrhea or constipation. Food you should avoid includes red meat, cheese, butter and sweets. You should also avoid foods that are fried because these also go rapidly through your body without being digested.
You also may want to avoid foods that are processed too much. Without the fiber of more natural foods and with artificial flavors and preservatives, you may feel worse. Also, some artificial sweeteners can upset people’s stomach, especially sorbitol.
Do not have too much caffeine because this can affect your digestive systems. Drinking alcohol is also not recommended for those with a stomach problem. The more you have, the poorer you may feel.
You do not want to make your stomach feel worse when you have a stomach ailment. You should also be careful with how you eat when you have a stomach ailment. Do not eat huge meals because this may bother your stomach. Instead, eat smaller meals. Also make sure to drink lots of water. Avoid the above foods and stick with stomach ailment staples, such as bananas, applesauce, rice, crackers, toast and similar foods, to make yourself feel better.
