How to Avoid Feeling self Conscious at the Gym
You love to exercise, but there’s something that you do not love about the gym—you feel self-conscious whenever you go. Fortunately there are a number of things you can do to help relieve your discomfort.
Focus on your goals
First, there is no reason to feel self-conscious at a gym, no matter what you look like or how many pounds you have to lose. Being at the gym is an incredible achievement and you should feel proud of what you’re doing. You may be able to feel less self-conscious if you realize that you are doing a great thing for your health.
Wear comfortable clothing
Just because some people dress a certain way does not mean that you have to as well. For instance, perhaps you have gym clothing that is tight on you, and this makes you feel uncomfortable. There is no reason that you can’t exercise in something that is looser. You may feel less self-conscious if you wear a different outfit.
Pick a quieter time of day
You also may feel more or less comfortable depending on the time of day you go to the gym. For instance, if you go at a very busy time you may be more self-conscious than when there aren’t as many people around. Alternatively, the opposite may be true for you. You may feel more comfortable when there are a lot of people and you blend in more.
Choose activities carefully
Participate in activities where you feel most comfortable. You may feel better joining a beginning aerobics class than lifting free weights around sculpted and toned gym members.
Take a friend
Another idea is to go to the gym with a buddy. You may feel much more comfortable if you are not alone—in fact you might enjoy it more.
Bring your mp3 player
It also helps to distract yourself. Bring your mp3 player and listen to your favorite music while you’re working out.
Membership options
You should also consider the type of gym that you join—for example, a fitness gym for women only.
Just because you feel self-conscious at the gym, you should not give up on your quest to get and stay healthy. The above steps can help you when you feel self-conscious.
