How to Choose a Title for your novel
The title for your novel is the way to represent your entire masterpiece in a single word or statement. It can showcase your book in an overt or much more subtle way. Follow these tips to help you choose a title.
First you want to consider the style for which you are going. Do you want something lighthearted for your contemporary series romance book? You may then choose something very obvious such as a statement about the book. For instance, if it is a book about a secret baby, then it could be “The Billionaire’s Secret Baby.” You may want a title that will stand out for readers who like that genre of book.
You need to consider how much of the story you want to give away in your title. For instance, in the title above, readers will get a good idea of what the book is about. If your title is “Fierce,” however, then the readers will not really know what it is about and will need to delve further. You also may feel that it is a more “dignified title.” You do not want the title to be completely misleading, however. For instance, a lighthearted book is unlikely to have the word “Death” in it unless it is in a funny play of words. Consider using strong adjectives. You can also try to give the reader an idea of the theme of the book such as “The Mystery of…” if it is a mystery or having the word “West” in a book that is a Western.
Think about the central themes of the book. There may be a statement that describes an important principle in the book. You may be able to take several themes to put it together for a catch theme. For instance, if the book is about someone who is going through a lot and overcoming challenges, then you may want to include the word “Courage.” Think about the general themes and what your novel truly portrays.
You want a reader to read the words and be enticed by the book. Certain keywords may do this such as the word “Captive” or something that has a sensual connotation.
Come up with a list of possible titles. Think about each one and what seems to fit the best.
Choosing a title for your book may be one of the most difficult decisions you will make about your work. You can also solicit opinions from people who have read your work to see if they have any ideas or how they like some preliminary title choices. Hopefully something will just seem to fit.
