: How to Decide what is appropriate to Wear to a Wedding

When you go to a wedding, you want to wear something that is appropriate. What will work will depend on the particular wedding, although there are some rules of thumb to follow for almost all weddings. Consider the following suggestions for making your wardrobe decision.
Consider how formal the wedding is
You will want to dress at the appropriate formality for the wedding. You do not want to go to a black tie wedding in a casual sundress, for instance. Sometimes the wedding party will indicate the level of clothing on the dress. For instance, they may specify Black Tie. They may also specify more of a range such as Black Tie optional, so that you can wear the very fancy or slightly below it. If they have not specified it, then you should think about the type of wedding it is. You may obviously wear something different to a casual beach wedding than a dinner wedding at a ritzy hotel. If you are at all unsure you can also ask the bride and groom to ascertain the type of dress they are looking for. You can also be cautious and dress a little more formally. You usually do not have a problem by dressing a little nicer, but dressing less formal is best avoided.
Consider the color
There are certain colors that are less appropriate for a wedding. You may want to avoid wearing white for instance. This color is usually reserved for the bride, and you certainly do not want her to feel like she is competing with you in dress. An off-white that could be mistaken for white might also not be the best, especially if the bride is wearing off-white. in addition, you may want to avoid an all-black ensemble. For some, this may be reminiscent of a funeral. You do not want people to think that you are going to the wedding in mourning! Depending on who you are, a very bright, attention-grabbing color such as fire engine red might not be the best.
Do not wear something that is too racy for the wedding
You do not want someone to be insulted by your garb. You might not want to dress like you are going to a nightclub if you are going to a garden wedding. You want to look classy.
When choosing clothing for a wedding, you want to make sure it will fit in well and not be offensive. Consider the above tips to aid you in this endeavor.
