How to Eat Healthy when everyone else is Eating Bad

It is difficult enough to eat healthy on your own, but it’s even more of a challenge when everyone around you eats poorly. You have to be extra diligent and careful so that you do not let the bad habits of others affect you. The following strategies can help.
Keep healthy food on hand
First, you might want to get your own healthy food for the house. You do not want to be forced to share in on the unhealthy food. Keep your own stash, and try to give yourself substitutes of the types of food. For instance, they may have unhealthy snack foods; you should keep vegetables and popcorn as healthy snack foods. If your family will be eating unhealthy pizza and you crave it, make your own healthy pizza or buy French bread or pita pizza. You may also want to keep your own healthy desserts such as yogurt so that you won’t feel left out when the family is enjoying ice cream sundaes.
Cook from scratch
You also might want to offer to do the cooking so that you can make healthy dishes. You may be able to ask that other people make things healthier for you. Sometimes it is easy. For instance, let’s say the others around you want spaghetti and meatballs but you just want spaghetti and marinara sauce, since the meatballs may have a high fat content. Or, ask that the meatballs are served separately so you can all enjoy the meal together and pick and choose what you’d like.
Be selective when eating out
If you go out to eat make sure to find restaurants that offer healthy options. Many do these days, so you should be able to find something that appeals to everyone.
It might get so extreme that you choose to eat your meals or at least your snacks elsewhere. This is be a last resort, since it’s preferable to spend mealtimes together. However if it is a situation that you are eating with friends such as in college then maybe you can find different friends who eat healthier to eat with instead.
You can also try to see if any of the healthy eating rubs off on your loved ones. They may see you eating healthy and be motivated to do it, too.
Even though it is more difficult to eat healthy when others around you are eating bad, it can be done. Try the above strategies for a win-win situation at mealtime.
