How to Encourage your Child to Walk

(410 Words)
One of the most exciting milestones your baby will achieve is taking those precious first steps. This occurs for many babies around their first birthday. There are different things that you can do in order to encourage your baby’s first steps.
Spend quality time with your child and encourage his or her first steps at the same time. Give your baby plenty of room on the floor in which to practice. Go in front of your baby and hold his or her hands while he or she is standing. You can then encourage him or her to walk forward by telling him or her to come to you while holding out a toy.
You can also encourage walking with toys that are specifically made to encourage walking such as a child-size shopping cart. You can also get the VTech Sit-to-Stand Learning Walker. Children can push this as they are learning to walk. This is not a classic walker when the child goes in something, because those are dangerous. Instead, this is a push toy that the child can use.
You can also get toys, tables and other objects that are a good height for the children to hold onto as they practice their steps. Make sure they do not have sharp edges. You can try to make a path through a room that the child can cruise along. Of course, make sure that these objects are sturdy because you do not want the child to fall as he or she is gripping one of them.
You can also let your child practice while you are outside. Make sure to get good shoes from a store such as Stride Rite, which specifically has shoes for children learning how to walk. When in the home, the child will learn best if he or she is barefoot.
You should also make sure that your home is very safe for your child to practice walking. Do not have cords going across walkways or loose carpeting. Of course, make sure to have baby safety gates and put anything hazardous or dangerous away.
There is no one time that any child is ready to start to walk. Some children learn at 10 months, while others learn at 14 months. Your doctor will tell you when there’s a problem, but otherwise do not push your child. When your child is ready, encouragement as well as the above techniques can help him or her take those first steps.
