:
(420 Words)
The college you go to can play a large role in what you learn and even what job you eventually can get. You will have many choices when it comes to college, and of course you want to find one that is good, and more specifically, suitable for you. Consider the following strategies to find the best institution.
Get a recommendation
One great way to find a good college is if you know someone who has gone to a college and been happy with it. No matter what reviews say, there is no substitute for personal experience. You can talk to them person and ask that they give you specific details about the college and what they did and did not like about it.
Read reviews and rankings
There are different entities that review, rate and rank both private and public colleges. One very influential one is Consumer Reports, which comes out with a detailed and comprehensive list. You can read through these, focusing on the attributes that you most want to see. Within each university, the individual programs are often ranked. One college, for instance, can have one program that is ranked very highly and another that is considered far less. Obviously the right college for you might depend on the particular program. If you are not sure of what you want to do or think that there is a chance you might change majors partway through, then you might want to find somewhere with many suitable areas.
You can also look for the details in the ranking. They may use criteria such as the job prospects of the alumni, student satisfaction and more.
Visit the potential schools
One great way to try to figure out whether you will really like the school is to actually visit it. You should plan a trip to every school you are seriously considering, if possible. They will often have people there who can give you a tour. You can get a feel for the campus and you might even be allowed to sit in on a class or two to get an idea of the teachers. You can ask students how happy they are with the experience. Look at the special features and amenities.
A good college can make all of the difference in your post high school life. If you start college and are really not happy, then you can always try to make a switch. Use the above strategies to help you find the college that is right for you.
