How to Find a Good Dermatologist
It is very important to find a quality dermatologist. They can detect the abnormalities that can turn into skin cancer, literally saving your life. The following are tips for finding a good physician.
Ask for recommendations
One of the best ways to find a good dermatologist is to ask people to recommend one to you. First you can ask people you know if they have anyone that they like. If you have a specific skin condition, then you might want to see if you can find someone who has something similar so that you can know how they treated that exact issue. You can ask everyone you know and perhaps you will be fortunate to get several people who recommend the same person. You can also ask about details regarding the person such as what they do and do not like about them.
You can also try to get a professional recommendation for a dermatologist. Most people will be able to ask their primary physician for one. Sometimes a health care clinic or a hospital will also have someone that they recommend.
Do research online
You may want to “Google” the name of the dermatologist you are considering. Sometimes there are online places where people make posts about them. Also, you can sometimes look up information about malpractice suits or other trouble that the physician might have gotten into so you can know to steer clear of them.
Go in for a consultation
When you are ready to give a dermatologist a chance, you might want to have a consultation. You can ask how long he or she has been practicing and if there are any areas of specialty he or she has. If you have a specific skin issue you can try to get a feel of how skilled he or she is with that. You might be able to get an idea of the type of treatment he or she offers and his or her views on medications. Make sure that he or she listens to your complaints because no matter how skilled at treating you he or she is, it will be difficult if they do not communicate with you.
When you decide to try a dermatologist, remember that you are not stuck forever. If you do not like the treatment you get or if you are at all uncomfortable or do not feel like he or she spends the time that they should then you should switch to someone else. A dermatologist will need to spot little things on you that could be a problem so if they rush they might miss something no matter how good they are. Keep going until you find the dermatologist that is right for you.
