:
(430 Words)
A fear of the opposite sex is troubling and far too common. There are steps that you can take to try to get over such a fear, including the following.
Consider why you have this fear and try to address these issues
You may want to truly think about why you have a fear of the opposite sex. Think about all of the reasons so that you can come up with a plan in order to get over them. For instance, are you looking for someone to date and are you afraid of rejection? This can be difficult to face – no one likes to be rejected – but if you do not go up to anyone then you will not be with them anyways. Although rejection is hard, it happens to almost everyone and you can get over it. By trying to conquer your fear of rejection if that is the case then you might help yourself to get over the fear of the opposite sex. Address any other issues you may have as well.
Enlist help from those that you know of the opposite sex
Most people know and are comfortable with some member of the opposite sex even if it is your mother, father, brother or sister. Perhaps it is an old friend. Think about how you feel with them. See if they can help you feel better about others of their gender. If you want to feel comfortable with members of the opposite sex, then remember that they are just people too. They also have fears, emotions, childhoods, etc. Sometimes people put members of the opposite sex on a lofty pedestal and feel like they just cannot communicate with them. You probably have more in common than you realize. Just be yourself.
Try to increase your confidence
Sometimes a fear of the opposite sex stems from a basic lack of confidence. There is no reason that you should not be confident in yourself – no matter who you are everyone has value. Believe in yourself and understand your worth. If you act confident then others will see that as well.
Force yourself to go out
Sometimes the best thing to do is to just force yourself to be in situations with members of the opposite sex. Do not let your fear conquer you so that you give up. As you do it more and more, you might grow more comfortable with members of the opposite sex. As your comfort level grows, so might your confidence and soon you might be proud to say that you are no longer afraid.
