(428 Words)
It can be very difficult to care for someone with Alzheimer’s. It is an important role, however, and the way you handle it and the strategies you take can make a big difference in how easy or difficult it is. The following tips can be helpful.
Gain a good perspective. It is very hard to see someone you love go through Alzheimer’s. It is very easy to look at only the bad. Instead you should try to look at the good. The person is still here; you can still see him or her. You can still bring him or her joy and vice versa. No matter what, you are playing an important role. If it is your parent, then remember how long he or she cared for you and how many sacrifices he or she made for you. One writer said this could be the last great lesson your parent taught you – to care for someone selflessly.
Some people need extra help, and that is okay. Perhaps someone else can help or maybe you can hire someone for some of the time. You may need help in the form of counseling. That is perfectly understandable and fine.
Try to keep things nice and calm with your loved one. Do not fight over things. If it is your mother and she asks where your father is, but he has been long passed, do not tell her that he has passed away. She will either not believe you or be forced to relive it. You can say that he is at work. Do not fight over details but instead agree with him or her.
Routines can be very helpful for someone with Alzheimer’s. So much is confusing in their world and changes can be very difficult. You may find that keeping some things the same will be the easiest for him or her.
You might be able to do things to help him or her stay as sharp for as long as possible. For instance, if he or she is able to play card games then you can try that. Just talking to him or her is important. You can also give him or her things to hold that might be nice or hold special significance.
It can be very challenging to care for someone with Alzheimer’s. Make sure that you also care for yourself. Think about all of the beautiful memories you have and the future ones you can make. Sometimes there is nothing more special than just holding a hand and whispering how much you love someone.
