(405 Words)
Carpooling can be a useful activity, which can save you money, the effort of driving, wear and tear on your car and can help the environment. There are different things that you can do to make the most of this activity. Consider the following ideas.
Get as large a group together as convenient
If you carpool with one person then you will save only half the gas, driving time, etc. If there are four of you in the car, however, you will only have to do it a quarter of the time, which is a much better deal. Of course you want to be comfortable on the ride, so don’t overstuff the car to the point that you feel squeezed in. Four is oftentimes a good number if you can manage it.
Take advantage of carpool lanes
Many areas now have carpool lanes. You may be able to go in a special lane on the highway, which is usually faster. This can save you a significant amount of time during rush hour.
Choose your carpooling partners carefully
There are different attributes that will be attractive in someone you carpool with. First, make sure that they are timely. You certainly do not want to be late for work because they perpetually oversleep. Next make sure that everyone lives close by. If you have to drive a long way to get each other, then you have just ruined the entire point of carpooling. Make sure that you are comfortable with their driving. You also want to make sure that you can tolerate their company for the drive. For instance, if you like to spend the time before work on your laptop preparing for work, make sure that it is someone who will understand this and not force conversation. Make sure there is no strained relationships. If a fight occurs between two people it can spell havoc for your carpool.
Make sure that everything is equal
You do not want one person to feel like they are being taken advantage of. Make sure that everyone takes their turn. If there is something that you all have to pay for such as one parking pass, then make sure it is split evenly. Also, make a good system for notifying the others if someone is sick and making alternate arrangements if necessary.
Carpooling can be great for many different reasons. Follow the above tips to make the most of it.
