How to Prevent Caregiver Burnout

(460 Words)
Caregiver burnout occurs when one becomes overwhelmed with the strain of caring for a loved one. It can be difficult to balance this role with all of the other roles one must play in life, including work, family life and various commitments. A number of strategies can help you get through these times.
Think about the good times
When you are caring for someone who is mentally or physically ill, it is easy to just look at the bad. You may be sad because of the declination of your loved one. Good memories of the past may be blocked, and the potential joy of the present may be overlooked. You can try to avoid burnout by learning to enjoy these times. Try to engage your loved one in conversation. Be patient with him or her. Think about how difficult this might be for him or her. If you have a better attitude, you may find that it becomes easier to deal with the situation as a whole.
Make time for yourself
Some caregivers feel like they have to devote every waking moment to their loved one. It is wonderful to be a responsible caregiver, but you need to take care of yourself as well. You should build in some time in which you can do the things that you enjoy.
Specifically your time should include relaxation techniques. Meditation is an excellent technique that can relieve stress. You can purchase a CD on guided imagery or just imagine that you are in a calming place. Listening to relaxing music may be helpful. Exercise can also be effective at getting out stress. These strategies can keep you from feeling overwhelmed by your role as a caregiver.
Get support
Sometimes the caregiver needs a caregiver. If there is someone else who shares some responsibility for this role such as a sibling to help care for an elderly parent, then ask for help. Do not feel like you have to shoulder it all alone if there are others there.
Sometimes you may just need to “vent.” Talking about your issues to a good friend or family member may also help you to get out some angst over the situation.
If you truly feel like you are having difficulty in your role, you can even seek some professional help. There are support groups specifically made for caregivers where you can share stories and learn techniques. You can connect with others in your situation. A counselor may also help you work through problems related to this role.
Being a caregiver is not easy, but it is an important role. Think about what a gift you are giving to the person and feel good about your altruistic behavior. The above strategies may help you with this task.
