Purchase machines that are more energy efficient
Sometimes you can realize huge savings despite an initial output of money. Many of the new washing machines and dryers are much more energy efficient than the old ones. You may save a lot of money if you get one of these. Also, certain types of washing machines are more energy efficient than other styles. You will usually spend less on the electrical output for a front-loading washing machine as compared to a top-loading machine, for instance. They generally use much less water. If you like to use hot water then you will not spend as much because you will not be heating as much. Pay attention to the energy ratings if you are looking for a new machine.
Run the loads full
It may seem like a waste to run a laundry for just a few items. Unless absolutely necessary, try to run them full. Also, sometimes you may be able to fit two loads of wash into one dryer load, which may save you dryer time and thus money.
Use cold water
Oftentimes cold water will be sufficient for your needs, and it is cheaper than using hot water. It is at least worth a try to see if it is sufficient.
Hang your clothing
It does not cost anything to hang your clothing on a line instead of drying it in the machine. As much as possible you can save the money you would use on your dryer in this way. If you just have a few items, then this would make sense.
Save money on laundry detergent and other supplies
You can often save money on your laundry detergent if you purchase it in larger quantities. It may be less per ounce. You can also price around at different stores because some are cheaper than others. Many manufacturers put out coupons for their detergents, dryer sheets and other items. You can also look for store brands to save money. Try to combine all of these methods such as buying the large Costco brand of concentrated detergent.
Laundry costs can add up, but many measures can help save you money. Try several or all of the above ideas to accomplish this.
