: How to Save Money on Food when Traveling

:
(465 Words)
One of the most expensive parts of travelling is often the food. Sometimes people do not think of it because unlike hotels or airfare it might not be one gigantic cost. However, it can be a series of smaller costs that can add up substantially. Consider the following tips for saving money on food while traveling.
Bring a lot of your own food if possible
There are times when you can bring your own food while traveling. For instance, if you are going on a long road trip, then instead of figuring that you will eat out every meal, which is usually expensive, get some low-cost foods that will go well in the car. You can bring sandwiches, fruit, cereals, snack foods and more. Obviously you will not be able to bring your entire fridge along, however you can buy coolers and keep your food good for quite a while.
Shop at grocery stores instead of eating out every meal
There are many hotels that have miniature refrigerators. It might be worth it to get one of those (it has become so commonplace that oftentimes it is no more money) because you can then get some of your food from grocery stores. For instance, many people are perfectly happy having cereal for breakfast. You can find a local grocery store on your travels (and many drugstores and even gas station convenience stores will have staples like milk) For a family of four you can pay a small fraction of the price to eat breakfast at the hotel as compared to eating out. You can also consider looking for a hotel that has a breakfast already included with the rates. Of course you want to make sure that you do not pay so much extra to stay at that hotel that the costs outweigh the benefits.
There are other ways that you can save money on food while traveling. If you will be staying at someone’s house, then you can try to eat in more than going out. You can offer to pay for some of the groceries and cook some of the meals if you feel that it would be too much for an imposition on the person. You will still probably save. If you must eat out then look for lower cost options. You can look at fast food restaurants instead of full eat-in restaurants. You can often find travel guides that list the general prices of restaurants. If you do Internet research before you go, you can find better priced eateries and those that have specials or deals like kids eat free that you might be able to take advantage of.
The cost of food can add up quickly while you are traveling. Consider the above tips to save money on this cost.
