Mammoplasty what to Expect before during and after

(666 Words)
Mammoplasty refers to cosmetic surgery of the breast. Although some equate the term with breast augmentation, this is but one of the different surgeries that fall under this title. In addition to breast augmentation or enlargement, the other major categories of surgery include breast reduction and reconstruction. What you should expect before, during and after the surgery will depend on the specific procedure.
You want to prepare yourself physically for any breast surgery. You should be healthy. The plastic surgeon may request a physical by your primary physician to ensure that you are well enough for surgery. Medical tests may include, but are not limited to, physical and breast exam, urinalysis, blood tests, EKG, chest x-ray and mammogram. It is important to talk to your physician about any medical conditions you may have, including medications you are taking.
The surgeon will want to make sure that he or she can get you the results you desire. They will schedule a consultation. You may look through pictures of different breast sizes and shapes so that you can clearly spell out what you desire. He or she may show you examples of the results and scars you are likely to get. They will take “before” pictures.
Your physician will tell you exactly how to prepare for the procedure. They may ask that you stop certain medications a week before the procedure. You will probably be directed to eat lightly the night before and nothing after midnight. You may be instructed to shower that morning, perhaps with a special soap. You also want to ask someone to transport you to and from the hospital or medical center.
There are many different techniques used within each type of mammoplasty. Fortunately, if things are done right, you will not feel them. Most women get general anesthesia for the procedure. Essentially you will be placed to sleep and should not feel or remember anything. In some cases local anesthesia will numb the area so that you are awake but do not feel anything.
During the procedure cuts may be made. Breast tissue may be removed or implants added. Ask your doctor for the exact details of the specific procedure you are receiving.
Mammoplasty is a significant surgery. After the procedure you are likely to experience some pain from the incisions. You will be prescribed painkillers to help you with the pain. They may ask you to move your arms to also help with pain. There is also likely to be swelling and bruising. For instance, if you had breast augmentation, you may first appear larger than you desired, but the swelling will go down over time. The scars will appear brighter and larger but these will fade (but not necessarily) disappear over time.
You may go home that day or you may need to stay in the hospital for a day or more depending on the procedure and any complications. In many cases, women will be able to resume normal activity in seven days, although strenuous activity such as exercise may be limited for six weeks.
A bra or bandage may be given to you, which will place pressure on your breasts. This can help with the bleeding. They may also suggest ice packs or specific massage to help with the recovery.
There are some risks that are associated with mammoplasty. General surgical risks include infections, hematomas, embolism-causing blood clots, and reactions to the anesthesia. Other complications are specifically related to mammoplasty. Some women cannot breastfeed after such a surgery. Scarring may be greater than anticipated or the desired result may not be achieved. A loss of sensitivity in the nipple or breast may occur.
Before your procedure, the doctor should hold a consultation to tell you exactly what to expect before, during and after the procedure. Be sure to pay close attention to his or her instructions and ask any and all questions that you have. With proper preparation you can make mammoplasty a positive experience.
