Many middle-schoolers would enjoy playing Pictionary. This is an easy game. First, you break the group into teams. One person from each team gets a topic and tries to draw it out; the other teammates try to figure out what it is as quickly as possible. The teams take turns. This can be a lot of fun and keep the children occupied.
You can also do some races in the middle-school birthday party. For instance, you can have a three-legged race where you tie one leg of each of two kids together and see which pair can run the fastest. You could also do a sack race with pillowcases or sacks you bought from a party supply store.
During the summer you can add in some water games. For instance, you can have a water balloon toss. Fill up water balloons and divide the children into teams of two people. The children need to toss the water balloon back and forth to the other person on the team. When a team drops and breaks a water balloon, they are out. The team who can keep the balloon unbroken the longest wins.
